Canary Islands From Space (Photo of the Day)
Captured on the 8th of September by the European Space Agency’s Envisat Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) are the Canary Islands, at the bottom of this image, off the west coast of Africa.
Pictured in this image are several notable features, including the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira to the top left of the image, and the desert flatlands of Morocco and the Western Sahara Desert to the right. The white lines in the top centre of the image are contrails left by aircraft.
According to the ESA, “earlier this week, an underwater volcanic eruption off the southern coast of the El Hierro island (in the lower-left corner) prompted authorities to evacuate hundreds from the Canaries’ smallest island.”

I'm a Christian, a nerd, a geek, a liberal left-winger, and believe that we're pretty quickly directing planet-Earth into hell in a handbasket! I’m a 27-year-old author and writer from Melbourne, Australia. My first book is in the "looking for an agent" phase right now while I write my second. I also review fantasy books over at Fantasy Book Review (.co.uk). I love words with a passion, both creating them and reading them.
