Secretary of Agriculture: "Hard to Explain" How Anyone Could Not Tell the Climate is Changing

tom vilsack

Yes, with heat records in the U.S. and elsewhere being set like there’s no tomorrow, disaster records being set in a similar manner, and a little bit of 1 plus 1 equals 2, it’s hard to believe anyone would not believe climate change is already happening. We are seeing the early effects of global warming today!

Add on the following chart on who has stated human-caused global warming is happening and who hasn’t, and one really has to wonder what Tea Partiers are smoking (since it is mostly just Tea Partiers who are still denying the science).

Apparently, though, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack is pretty fed up with the global warming deniers and their influence on politics. Check out this video from an interview last week (transcript follows):

BROWNER: It’s nice to hear someone use the word “climate change” in this current political debate we have going on about the science.

VILSACK: Can I just say something about that?

BROWNER: [Laughs] This was not in the script.

VILSACK: No it wasn’t but I think it’s important to point out what’s happening here. We have record droughts in the southern part of our country, record droughts. We have record snowfall and snowmelt in the northern part of our country which is now causing significant flooding challenges. The average, and the worst week of tornados we’ve ever experienced in this country is roughly about 150 tornados in a week; in May we had 350 tornados in one week. We had a hurricane and a tropical storm that didn’t just impact the coast areas as it normally does, but was in upstate New York—upstate New York—looking at damage resulting from the storm that basically wiped out whole fields of agricultural crops—whole fields. Folks who had never experienced flooding conditions, that were directly related to a storm that was hundreds of miles away. If people don’t understand that the climate is changing, it’s just hard to explain how anybody could not see that, given this year that we’ve had with natural disasters.

Thank You, Mr. Vilsack!

  2. There is nothing wrong with people questioning policies and beliefs. Those that just take opinions of others are not educated enough make a decision on anything. Regardless of what people have said the only thing that matters is FACT. Unfortunately the scientific data to support or deny global warming claims is flawed and narrow in scope. I refuse to accept nor deny global warming and live my life as if it did exist. The scientific community has made it taboo to question the validity of global warming and that’s part of the problem. When was the last time a real debate was had on the existence of global warming? You will be hard pressed to find one that leans the way of global warming. Every decade there are new dangers and things that spur fear and this seems to be the fear for 2000’s. Bird flu, Killer bees, ozone layer, deforistation, and so on.

    1. Jeff, i can see you are an earnest person with good intentions. But the fact of the matter is that climate science is extremely robust, has decades upon decades of research and empirical evidence, and global warming has been proven not based on one line of evidence but over 10. (The findings are sound and, TOGETHER, tell us very clearly what is happening, despite what some industry leaders and politicians tell us.) The science is anything but narrow (see: http://www.skepticalscience.com/empirical-evidence-for-global-warming.htm ; http://planetsave.com/2010/08/18/humans-cause-global-warming-10-indicators/). And it is for exactly this reason that the following organizations have declared that the world is warming due to human causes:

There are no longer debates on the existence of gravity, or on heliocentrism, or on the fact that smoking can cause cancer. Why? Is it because of a lack of facts?

No, it is because of the clear evidence…

On some of your other points:
      — The bird flu issue was not based on decades (or actually even over a century) of scientific research, nor ‘killer bees’.
      — The ozone layer was a great problem, but we addressed it. Yay for strong govt action!
      — Deforestation is still a huge problem, it is a huge factor related to global warming.
