Greenpeace Creaming World Record for Comments on a Facebook Post

April 13th, 2011 by

Update: The post received 80,027 comments in 24 hours.

Greenpeace has been pushing Facebook continuously to “Unfriend Coal,” as we’ve covered from time to time here on Planetsave. The last time I updated you, last week, I mentioned that Greenpeace was going to attempt the World Record for the highest number of comments on a Facebook post within a 24-hour period.

Well, today is the day of the attempt, and the record has already been crushed. As I’m writing this, there are over 59,000 comments on the post. The target to break the record according to Guinness World Records was 50,000.

Nonetheless, the day is not over and Greenpeace is pushing us to hit 100,000 comments now. If you have done so yet, do so here.

Beyond the Internet

Beyond just stimulating an incomprehensible number of comments, Greenpeace is bring these comments to Facebook. It is “showing these comments in support of renewable energy on a large scrolling screen in front of Facebook’s headquarters.”

How can Facebook ignore this?

50 Top Commenters Will Win a Prize

Greenpeace announced that it would be choosing the 50 top commenters of the day based on “the number of comments they make, the number of friends they tag, and the quality of the comments” and give them each a ‘Facebook Unfriend Coal’ t-shirt. Think you’ve got what it takes to win?

Commenting Tips

Greenpeace has left us with a handful of great commenting tips. Use these and go comment now!

  • You have to ‘like’ www.facebook.com/unfriendcoal to comment
  • Comment multiple times – it still counts!
  • “@nametag” ten friends in the comment so they can join in the record too.
  • Share the link on your own profiles
  • Stay on topic – Facebook and renewable energy. Send your message to Facebook staff. Ask questions. Give opinions. Spark debate. Tell your story!
