Extreme Super Moon To Cause Major Earthquakes?

Coming up later this month (March 19 to be exact) the moon will make its closest approach to Earth (called lunar perigee) in 18 years. A new or full moon at 90% or greater of its closest perigee to Earth has been named a “SuperMoon” by astrologer Richard Nolle.

This term has recently been picked up by astronomers as well. An extreme “SuperMoon” is when the moon is full or new as well as at its 100% greater mean perigee (closest) distance to earth.

Can this Super Moon contribute to extreme weather?

AccuWeather member Daniel Vogler says, “The last extreme super moon occurred was on January 10th, 2005, right around the time of the 9.0 Indonesia earthquake.

“That extreme super moon was a new moon. So be forewarned. Something BIG could happen on or around this date. So what can we expect this time? Earthquakes? Volcanic eruptions? I guess we can only wait and see.”

What are the actual chances?

Astronomer and lecturer David Reneke claims there’s more cause for alarm about the extent of human paranoia than any sort of impending apocalypse.

“If you try hard enough you can chronologically associate almost any natural disaster/event to anything in the night sky … comet, planet, sun,” he said.

“Remember in the past, planetary alignments were going to pull the sun apart. It didn”t. Astrologers draw a very long bow most times. Normal king tides are about all I would expect out of this SuperMoon prediction.”

From what I have read on various sites, with all the recent seismic tremors shaking the planet and new fissure eruptions (more on that in coming posts), I would say something major is about to happen.

I think that our planet has finally come to its boiling point. We have destroyed it with mountaintop removal coal mining (MTR). Mining and oil and gas drilling have poisoned its water and atmosphere.

But let’s just hope Mr. Vogler is wrong on his prediction and Mr. Reneke is right. The people around the world have suffered enough from natural disasters in recent years. Which, in return, brings more death and destruction to our planet and its people.

  1. Natural resourses are available for the needs of the human race. To say we are destroying the earth from using the resources available to help the human race is contradiction. The Bible says their is a time to be born and time die, a time to build and time to tare down…. there is nothing new under the sun. The Bible has propecies that have been fullfilled and are currently being fullfilled and much more to say about life, why not go to the source for answers.

  2. Well said Michael.

Though it doesn’t seem like a stretch to me to consider that the moon MAY play a role in techtonic movements it would require alot more data over a longer period than we have available to even begin to draw conclusions.

Also, mining and pollution have no effect on earthquakes or the moon… Even if we can all agree pollution is bad, mmmkay?

  3. I find these discussions interesting. I’m 63 and the changes I’ve seen astound me and even more so when I think of the changes my friend Bob has seen in his 101 years.

It seems someone is always predicting the “end” whatever that turns out to be and generally any event of a significant nature lends a little bit of credence to the claims. If God brings an end to things then that precludes a need for any scientific musings about the current isuues.

On the other hand, if we do ouselves in then God can save us. If it turns out that God doesn’t save us and we don’t (can’t, won’t) save ourselves it precludes any need for any discussion.

Bob and I are still waiting to see what’s going to happen as things continue to change.

    1. Take a walk or read) in an athiest’s shoes and re read your comment.

If you aren’t horrified by that logic theres a problem.

If people want to believe in something, if it gives their lives greater meaning, AWSOME. Just don’t drag the rest of the world down in your apocolyptic mental ramblings.

  4. i know that the last time the moon was at its brightest & closest to earth was in 12.22.1999. this is in my calendar because i watched the moon then practically the whole evening & it was spectacular. it was said then that that event was unprecedented since 1866.
it makes me wonder about this supermoon on march 19.

  5. There are so many misconceptions in these comments that it’s difficult to address them all.The general scientific axiom needed here is ‘correlation is not causation”, that is, just because ‘a’ occurs near ‘b’ doesn’t mean that ‘a’ caused ‘b’.

Another related, false notion is (Latin this time): post hoc ergo proctor hoc, meaning (loosely) ‘if ‘b’ comes after ‘a’, then ‘b’ was caused by ‘a’.

The January 10, 2005 perigee came two weeks after the Indonesian quake….at what point do we draw the line in terms of causative forces? Is an event two weeks after another still causally linked? And, what of all the other major quakes (8.0 and higher…were these all “correlated” with a lunar perigee?

The moon does not (alone) control the tides; tidal forces are the result of the interaction of three bodies: Earth, Moon and Sun. The moon’s orbit around the Earth together with the Earth’s rotation create a ‘barycenter’ between the two, propelling certain tidal forces…all of which are further impacted by the Earth-Moon’s proximity to the Sun (in its eccentric orbit).

Thus the highest tides (strongest tidal forces) would occur when the Moon is at its perigee with Earth and the Earth-Moon system is closest to the Sun (not sure at this time how close we are to that).

That said, in general, seismic activity is caused by the natural subduction and elevation of tectonic plates which :”float” atop the Earth’s mantle (periodically perturbed by deeper, core events). The connection between Moon orbit and earthquakes is tenuous, to say the least.

The Book of Revelation does not read like a newspaper; it reads like all newspapers from all times (when has there NOT been “wars and rumors of wars”, earthquakes and plagues…?…

When the only tool you have is a hammer, you tend to treat everything as if it were a nail.

    1. We all have the right to choose our own “TOOLS” I chose the BIBLE. You have every right to choose yours. That’s called Freedom. Thanks for your comment.

  6. It makes sense to me! It the moon makes the tides. It is a very large thing that exerts massive gravitational forces that could affect the plates. Judging by the date, the author predicted the Japanese earthquake which is now measured at 9.0 and one of the 5 biggest earthquakes ever measured. You have my attention!

  7. Incomprehensible super weapons no doubt exist. Experimentation on applying control and focus seems an obvious and good guess. People who think for a living and who have the added advantage of intuition, such as prophetess Dolores Cannon, did say many years ago, that inconceivable weapons would be used in the next major world? war. Looking back at the (Senator) Paul Wellstone murder, it was likely that a directed energy weapon “cooked” all the on board electronic systems and further Iraqi’s were found, “cooked alive” especially the torso and head areas. Ionizing the upper atmosphere across large areas wouldn’t surprise me one bit.

  8. our people need to be take ways and precautións about this events. Our land had be the reclamatións for every tree and animal that we are killing. And the material consumer our conduccing to be in the worst catastrofe.

    1. Oh yeah! If you think the book of Revelation is like reading the newspaper, Read the books of Daniel and Ezk. It will blow your mind. Not pushing religion just saying.

  9. Has anyone thought about the HAARP project in Alaska? If not, I think it is a possibility that needs investigation. A funny thing about that is that a week before the devastating quake in Haiti FEMA had quake drills there..odd on it’s own, but when you look at the capabilities of the HAARP, and the fact that the HAARP logs for the day before were conveniently “deleted”, one has to really put that potential into perspective. Keep in mind that FEMA and DHS are planning quake drills for the New Madrid Faultline in the central US in May, tied to the fact that if you look at the bird and fish die offs in the central US, and draw a line between them you will find they trace along the fault. Testing on the birds showed no toxins, but the electronic energy from the HAARP could easily explain this anomoly. Just a thought I wanted to interject. Things are not as they appear. I hope I’m wrong, but there is more than enough evidence readily available that warrants a major concern on all our parts. Remember Obama’s 2nd in command statement concerning the largest oil spill in US history….you don’t let a crisis go to waste. The fact of this potential naturally caused disaster being a perfect opportunity to place the blame is a very serious concern.

    1. Yes, I’ve heard of it. The technology is there and makes it possible. Yet, we are considered conspiracy theorists. The government must really believe we are ignorant and the ones who know the truth are deemed insane.

  10. This month’s lunar perigee is NOT the closest in 19 years, and lunar perigee has no impact on Earth beyond slightly higher and lower mean tides. We’ve had closer perigees as recently as 2008, and Full Moon frequently occurs at lunar perigee. The only effect is a slightly larger-looking Full Moon. The fullness of the Moon is merely its full illumination, which has absolutely nothing to do with the actual size of the Moon. Articles like this do a great disservice to the very real issues of climate change and ecology.

    1. Tavigreiner, Might you be able to provide any links or references to works proving that lunar perigee ‘has no impact on earth”?
To say a link is impossible is as silly as saying the perigee will definitely cause an earth reaction. thanks.

  11. Not that this article was meant to scare… it was just information that was put forth for the reader to take from it what they chose.
It is, however, eerily coincidental that almost 2 days later a massive quake hit Japan.
My opinion? Our earth is sick. We are witnessing the symptoms of a greater problem.
I am appalled that people would attribute all of these global crisis to doomsday prophecies… They were all self-created!

    1. Renee, I suggest you to rely less on your opinion and more on science facts. The planet (in its geology or in its activity) is NOT sick.
This article just stated that Science has found correlation with the moon coming close in some circumstances. It happens a lot with Jupiter’s moon IO, but in our case it’s in a far lesser repercussions.

If you are considering the earth sick due to pollution or Greenhouse gases and Global warming/climate change…

Than this has NOTHING to do with that. It’s another debate.

      -G-

        1. I agree, a lot more to come I’m afraid. I just watched a video on Japan, where a man made part of the Island is cracking and water is shooting up all over the place. Poor people.

    2. I wounder how many people driving around in their flint stone cars could have made the Earth SICK enough to cause Pangaea. I’m almost positive that the earth saw climate change like we never will. Just Saying!!!!

      1. Boonedaddy, the Earth has changed dramatically over many years, but the rate of climate change we are expected to see on our current path is extreme and there are likely less than a handful of times in history when the climate changed so rapidly

  12. while talking about it.
the article date march 8 2011
check on the internet you will see
    a 8.8 earthquake just hit Japan at 1430 ( March 10 2011)
    two days after the article.

          1. Well there was a massive earthquake, if you havent been watching the news. Tsunami Alert for New Zealand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Hawaii, and others.

    1. “From what I have read on various sites, with all the recent seismic tremors shaking the planet and new fissure eruptions (more on that in coming posts), I would say something major is about to happen”.

Japan 8.9..Earthquake…hhmmmmm. Now read the full article, with the dates that Mr. Vogler gave.

Climate change is real…we are destroying our planet and the Solar system. It’s not “JUNK” science, it’s the truth.

I didn’t write the article to scare anyone. I wrote the article because I care about this planet and the people who live on it. “All People”

      1. Has anyone thought about the HAARP project in Alaska? If not, I think it is a possibility that needs investigation. 1. Ok, it doesn’t cause earthquakes. The moon is still 4,000 miles further away than it was 3 weeks ago (or the month before that or the month before that…) The same was true of 2005, when the moon was further away from the Earth than at most monthly perigees.

As for correlating it with Jupiter’s effect on Io, fine, but remember the effect of the Moon on the Earth is around one 640 millionth of Jupiter’s on Io. About as likely as breaking a bone when a raindrop lands on you (yes it might happen coincidentally, but not because of the raindrop).

      2. Caused by the supermoon? You have no evidence pointing to that. Also, you are using TWO earthquakes from the past 6 years to prove a point. There have been TEN magnitude 8 or higher earthquakes in the past five years. Earthquakes happen, and they happen often. Either take a course in plate tectonics or get used to it.

        1. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!Take a good look on what’s happening around the whole entire world.God is warning us.Read your Bible and pray for His mercy.”If therefore thou shalt not watch,I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.”Scoffers go on and take your best shot.I don’t mind I pray for you most.

          1. “Take a good look on what’s happening around the whole entire world.” Indeed. More people healthy and well-fed than ever before, hundreds of millions of people in the first and second world living easier and more productive lives than could have been imagined even a hundred years ago. Thank God we don’t live in the Middle Ages with the Black Death, the year with no summer and the constant struggle just to survive. Those must have really felt like the End Times. He must think we’re doing the right thing, God bless Him(self).
