Charlie Sheen Cartoon, Climate Change, and the U.S. Today

We’ve got a lot of crazy stuff going on these days. It makes you wonder if society isn’t just increasingly obsessed with craziness and subconsciously determined to do crazy, self-destructive things… what else would explain our obsession with Charlie Sheen, our ignorance of and inaction on catastrophic climate change, and our decision to put people in political office whose #1 goal is to squeeze money out of us and give it to billionaires?

On Climate Progress, where I ran across the cartoon above, Joe Romm also mentioned a new quiz by NY Magazine that actually demonstrates the struggle of  distinguishing between the crazy quotes of an entertainer, a despot, and a U.S. “newsman.” The quiz? “It’s Time to Play ‘Sheen, Beck, or Qaddafi?’”

The sad part — and the point — is that Beck actually influences tons of people on the critical topic of climate change nearly everyday, in a truly crazy way.

What are we in store for? I think most of us don’t even want to think about that..

  1. I just read an interesting article by James Downie of the New Republic called “The Decline of Glenn Beck.”
Downie says that in the past six months both his rating and his reputation have been in steep decline. Apparently his show has lost a million viewers over the course of the past year, and many conservatives are actively and vocally distancing themselves from his brand of wild demagoguery.
Obviously if Beck influences just one person on climate, it is one too many, but it appears his star may be fading. One can hope.
