IKEA Gives Bikes to Its 12,400 U.S. Employees

Christmas present ikea bike

That’s one selfish Christmas present. Well, maybe not so selfish since giving bikes to all of its employees will help the whole world (bicycling is perhaps the greenest mode of transport). But, truthfully, IKEA can expect to save a lot of money from its employees being healthier, missing work less, and working more productively if even a small percentage of them use this present to bike to work (or to bike anywhere) more.

Of course, the bike could be worth much more than its market price to IKEA’s employees as well. If they use it for transportation, they can save a ton of money. And, as mentioned above, if they use it for any purpose, they can expect to save money on healthcare costs and live a longer, more comfortable life.

Anyway, what’s IKEA got to say about it?

It’s been a good year for IKEA, so what better way to celebrate our success than to thank our IKEA co-workers who made this happen. Our big reveal today will be a fun day as we unload 12,400 new bikes at IKEA US locations. This is our way of saying ‘thanks IKEA co-workers for being strongly committed to working together.’ We hope this bike will be taken in the spirit of the season while supporting a healthy lifestyle and everyday sustainable transport.

And, yes, the bike above with the IKEA colors on it is one of the 12,400 bikes.

Here’s a little more info on the bike itself from Bike Portland: “The bike has a mountain-bike inspired frame, an upright stem and bars, and a triple-chainring up front.”
