Appalachia Rising! [VIDEOS]
Mountaintop removal coal mining is bad stuff. It is destroying habitats and communities, poisoning people, and annihilating ancient mountains and national treasures.
Appalachia Rising!, a national response to the unmitigated destruction of Appalachia’s mountains, air and water through mountaintop removal coal mining started today in Washington, D.C.
Individuals from around the country, grassroots groups and organizations, Appalachians, and national organizations are in D.C. for a weekend-long conference around this critical topic, Voices from the Mountains.
And Monday is the Appalachia Rising! Day of Action, “which will unify thousands in calling for an end to mountaintop removal though a vibrant march and rally,” Appalachia Rising writes. This “Day of Action” will be an “act of dignified non-violent civil disobedience… for those who wish to put their sentiments into action by risking arrest.”
According to organizer and West Virginia resident Bo Webb:
Voices from the Mountains will be the largest gathering against mountaintop removal to-date. The time has come to finally bring all these communities to the table around this issue because it is directly-impacted citizens that are going to end this destructive practice and Appalachians who are leading the way towards creating a more diverse regional economy and sustainable future for our region.
